Modernism is described as a tendency in theology to accommodate traditional religious teaching to contemporary thought and especially to devalue supernatural elements and modern artistic or literary philosophy and practice; especially: a self-conscious break with the past and a search for new forms of expression (Merriam-Webster). Amy Lowell was not a know writer until gender studies began. Lowell was a women who wrote her erotic love poems to women, she was know for her imagist poetry(Lewis). Lowell was known to be in a “Boston Marriage”(Lewis). According to about.com a boston marriage was originally used in the 19th century to describe two women living together, a Boston Marriage still is the term used to describe two women who decide to live together in a marriage-like relationship.
Amy Lowell was born into a wealthy family. She attended many different private schools, and she was far from the model student(Lewis). Lowell accepted a marriage proposal, but then the man back out to be with another women(Lewis). Amy took a trip to Europe and Egypt to recover from the heart break and went on a diet that nearly ruined her health(Lewis).
Lowell’s poem “A London Thoroughfare. 2 am.” tended to excite controversy. Lowell believe in the imagist movement being lead by Ezra Pound(Faderman). She wanted to bring the imagist movement to America. Imagist valued classic values. Lowell was more conservative in her writing compared to in real life(Faderman). She want people to read her work without being ignorant about the lesbian aspect(Faderman).
Compared to other writers such as Carl Sandburg and Flannery O’Connor she had many belief that she lived by. Lowell wanted to bring something new to America such as imagist writing. All of these author brought a new piece of information that forms our literary history.
