Ernest Hemingway’s "In Another Country" is just another one of his books that is perfect for describing the thoughts and feelings being displayed during that time period. The main theme in "In Another Country" is the war and how the characters are feeling in the book about the war. Another book that Hemingway uses a lot of symbolism, a well known Modernism trait, and also the perserverience and subject of faith in is "The Old Man and the Sea". It is very easy to tell where Hemingway got his information and motivation to write the book "In Another Country" because of the events in his life that related him to war.
There were many different parts things that were going on in the world at the time of Modernism writing and one of the main things was war. War made people change their view of the world. People became full of despair, delusional, horrified that everything would fall apart, and it made them lose faith. In Hemingway’s "In Another Country" the main theme of the short story is the war. There is one character in the story who is known as Major, and he is Hemingway’s example of the person who has lost their faith. In the story the Major is suffering from a battle wound where his hand has been singed, the following is a excerpt from the story where the doctor is trying to boost his confidence with a picture of one of his other patients recovery: “The major held the photograph with his good hand and looked at it very carefully. ‘A wound?’ he asked. ’An industrial accident,’ the doctor said. ’Very interesting, very interesting,’ the major said, and handed it back to the doctor. ’You have confidence?’ ’No,’ said the major.” (Hemingway). The Major is a smaller part of the story and possibly the big picture of the story but he is the perfect example that Hemingway uses to exemplify that kind of loss of faith that people were beginning to experience because of the war and the affects that it was having on people’s lives.
Another book by Ernest Hemingway is the famous "The Old Man and the Sea". This book not only exemplifies the loss of hope and faith that the old man is experiencing while he is at sea, but also that perseverance of the people at that time. People were striving to have something that would keep their spirits up and in "The Old Man and the Sea" that person is the famous baseball player, DiMaggio (Hemingway The Old). Not only is DiMaggio a reference to a hero to the old man but he is also used by Hemingway as a symbol of hope and preservation that the old man uses to keep going (Hemingway The Old). The same way the Hemingway kept mentioning DiMaggio in "The Old Man and the Sea" Hemingway also mentions the before and after pictures of different patients that are in the machine room (Hemingway). These pictures are a symbol of something that they men who are trying to recover can look at and get a hint of hope from. These pictures are the men’s hero (Hemingway).
While on the subject of comparing Hemingway’s books to each other, he can also be compared to different authors of the Modernism time. Compared to other poems written by authors during this time period, I believe that Hemingway did the best job of using symbolism in his works. The poem Incident by Countee Cullen was a imagists poem that was very straight forward, where as "In Another Country" is a short story of the same time period that uses more of the symbolist style of writing.
It is extremely easy to see where Hemingway would get his motivation to write "In Another Country" because he was involved in World War I. “After the United States entered the First World War, he joined a volunteer ambulance unit in the Italian army. Serving at the front, he was wounded, was decorated by the Italian Government, and spent considerable time in hospitals.” (Nobel). After learning the information above, it is safe to say that Hemingway is writing as the author of the events that are unfolding in "In Another Country". Knowing the these were personal experiences for Hemingway, the reader can now see that not only was he using symbolism, loss of faith, and a hero as his style of Modernism writing, but he was also using personal thoughts and ideas to reveal the truth to his readers.
Ernest Hemingway was the perfect author for this time period of Modernism. He really knew how to grasp the concepts that people were experiencing at this time and relate them in the style of books and short stories. Hemingway is the text book example of what a Modernism author would write like. Work Cited Hemingway, Ernest. "In Another Country - Hemingway's Original Text." APO. Taylor Gorda:
Many authors have been recognized for their literary excellence, but Ernest Hemingway stands high above all of them. With his simple yet detailed descriptions, exciting lifestyle, and relatable stories, he won the hearts of his readers. His short story "In Another Country" is his own recollection of being in Italy during World War I (Oliver). This story represents modernism in the sense that Hemingway is in unknown territory, braving all the dangers around him. This differs from other works of modernism for several reasons.
Ernest Hemingway led a very exciting, whirlwind lifestyle (Oliver). Whether it was the five wars he was in, the six automobile or airplane crashes he survived, or the Nobel and Pulitzer prizes he won, Hemingway did things some people only dream of (Oliver). All of this was inspiration for his hundreds of writings. "In Another Country" is special because he had first-hand experience in this war in Italy, and he could give an insider's description of being there (Oliver). For example, he stated that the people of Italy did not accept their presence, and the soldiers "felt held together by there being something that had happened that they, the people who disliked us, did not understand." (Hemingway). Hemingway's life was influential on his writing because he could give people the sense of actually being there.
Hemingway is known as an important modernist author because of his style of writing. First, his simple way of explaining his surroundings is not conventional, and is not something that a lot of authors do. His out-of-the-box style gave people the impression that he was convinced on being his own person, something many people were discovering during this time period. Second, Hemingway shows the classification of people, typical to modernism and this time period because of war. He explains how soldiers are sometimes looked down upon by civilians, especially these Italian civilians (Hemingway). Lastly, Hemingway shows depth in this short story, and depth is one of the main characteristics of modernism. He tells the story of his major, whose wife died shortly before of pneumonia. Hemingway can easily see how this is affecting his major by saying, "he only looked out the window." (Hemingway). The major was not focused on anything else because he was thinking of his lost loved one.
This short story by Hemingway is different from other modernist works because of his different writing style previously mentioned. Also, it differs from the others from the project because they have more of an optimistic feel, which is typical of modernism. But this short story goes into more detail about what soldiers, or anyone in the war for that matter, have to suffer through while overseas (Hemingway).
In conclusion, Ernest Hemingway's writing was a staple during the modernism literary period. He used his personal experiences to create detailed yet relatable stories, drawing readers in. His minimal writing style portrayed modernism and showed his individuality. Lastly, his work was different from most other work from that time period, giving him more reason to stand out from other authors. Hemingway will always be remembered for his riveting stories of his life.
