"The Young Housewife" is a very simple poem, that has a lot of meaning behind the little words that are in it. I believe that it is about a housewife who takes care of the house that her and her husband live in. She takes care of everything for him and keeps the house running. In the last stanza, how the man “drives by smiling”(Williamson), I think he wishes that he had a housewife like her to be loyal to him. Also, it says she “walks about in negligee” (Williamson), negligee means a light night gown. This could represent that she is ghost like to her husband. This poem represents modernism by seeming fragmented throughout it (Authors). The words and in the poems are very simple and do not seem to flow together to form a complete thought. Also, along with that, it doesn’t seem to relate to any sequence. Next, it represents modernism because there is destruction of family. In this poem the housewife seems to go unnoticed by the husband, even though she is loyal to him and does everything for him (Authors).
This poem is different to other writings because it is very basic and very simple. He hides many meanings throughout his work, for example, "The Red Wheel Borrow". It talks about a “red wheel borrow” but there is a totally different meaning for the poem than what is said. Although, this poem is much longer than "The Red Wheel Borrow". It is different from other poems read in class because of the same reason, it is so simple and to the point, even though is has so much other meaning than what it is really talking about in the poem.
The poems written by Williams reflected his life (Excerpts). He tried many different styles throughout his life and finally decided to stick with simple, meaningful poems. He was also influenced by Ezera Pound in his writings. He also liked to be unique and have his own style, and wanted to create a clear, American voice through his writings (Excerpts).
William Carlos Williams’ poems are very simple and not like many other works that are read in class. His poems are also similar to other writings because there is more to them than what is said. Although, his poems still reflect the modernism period because his writings are fragmented and do not flow together, and he has destruction of family within his poem.
